Artist In Residence Program
Ceramics Residency
1 – 2 Years
BCAT’s residency program runs on a yearly basis (with the option to reapply for a second year), cycling from the beginning of September through the end of August, with typically 2-3 resident artists at a time. Resident artists are given full access to all studio materials, equipment, and storage/work area within the studio. Artists are responsible for their own food, and other personal expenses.
Artists are required to work 25 hours a week in exchange for:
– Shared living space (includes utilities and laundry)
– 24/7 studio access
– Consumable studio materials and kiln firings
– A solo exhibition at the end of the residency
Work hours include but are not limited to:
– Assisting in teaching in the after-school program for high school students M-F, 2:30 – 5:30 p.m.
– Cleaning and maintaining the studio space (cleaning floors, firing gas and electric kilns, mixing clay, etc.)
– Chaperoning on student field trips
– Various in-school or community-based projects
The ceramic studio is equipped with a fully stocked glaze lab, 15 Brent CXC potter’s wheels, one 16 cu. ft. Olympic electric oval kiln, one Baileys 40 cu ft. downdraft car kiln, one electric Skutt 1027, one small Skutt test kiln, one small Olympic electric test kiln, one gas raku kiln, Shimpo slab roller, pug mill, spray booth, ball mill, clay extruder, clay mixer, two large canvas work tables, a large variety of clay tools, shared storage space for residents, and access to photography set up and Adobe Suite for documentation of work. Residents work in the shared studio space.

Ceramics Application Process
There is no fee to apply to the artist in residence program.

Metals Residency
1 – 2 Year
BCAT’s metals artist in residence program is currently accepting applications for the program. With typically 1 resident at a time, resident artists are given full access to the studio, equipment, and jewelers bench within the studio. Artists are responsible for their own food, and other personal expenses.
Artists are required to work 25 hours a week in exchange for:
– Shared living space (includes utilities and laundry)
– 24/7 studio access
– A variety of metals and materials
– A solo exhibition at the end of the residency
The metals studio includes:
– Soldering and casting torches
– Enamel and casting kilns/ tools
– Electroforming, lampworking, and powder coating facilities
– A wide range of stakes/ hammers/ hand tools
– Drill press, band saw, sander, tumblers
– Hydraulic press, polisher, rubber mold & wax injecting facilities
– Roll-mill and grinder
-Access to photography set up and Adobe Suite for documentation of work.
Work hours include but are not limited to:
– Assisting in teaching in the after-school program for high school students M-F, 2:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Metals Application Process

2. Current CV-listing education, exhibitions, work experience, etc.
3. Bio of 150 words or less
4. 20 images (can be a PDF of a PowerPoint, or website)
5. Three professional references that are familiar with you and your work experience. Please include email and phone numbers
6. At least one letter of recommendation emailed separately by reference
Resident candidates will be interviewed by the BCAT executive director, Community Outreach Specialist, and Metal Arts Teaching Artist. They may be required to do a Skype metal project demonstration. Please feel free to contact us with any questions!
